Program Description: The program covers in first two years translation, survey of English Literature, textual analysis, introduction to poetry, ancient Greek and Roman literatures, mythology, Latin, and courses on various periods of English literature such as Medieval Literature, 16th and 17th Century English Literature, 18th Century English Literature, 18th Century Novel and Social History of Britain. Last two years include representative works of major 19th and 20th century British poets, prose writers, novelists and playwrights. In their final year students are required to submit an undergraduate thesis on a particular topic in British literature within the frame of various critical, theoretical and methodological discourses.

MA program consists of two components: course period and dissertation period.  The aim of the program is to improve students’ basic learnings of BA degree in English Literature to a more advanced level.  The program offers more courses that are specific on literary periods, movements, figures, works etc. Through the program, students are provided with abilities to make academic research and to write a well-organized dissertation as well as provide comprehensive training in all areas of English studies.

PhD program consists of four main components: course period, preliminary exam, thesis proposal, writing/presentation of dissertation. The program provides students with academic efficiency, which lets them, work as scholars, critics, tutors or teachers. In the course of the program, students develop advanced abilities to approach literary texts with critical and analytical methodologies, professional training in literary research, theory, and the teaching of literature and writing.

Program Description: The Department focuses on cultural, social and intellectual life of the United States of America. Our program offers courses in American literature as well as American cinema, literary theory, and translation among others which analyze the cultures, histories, politics, and arts. We help students to develop the ability to analyze literary texts and provide critical thinking skills, a critical approach to society and culture and to the American past and present. Undergraduates are expected to prepare a senior thesis on a specific subject, which enables them to conduct independent study and research. All freshmen are required to take the English Proficiency Test administered by the School of Foreign Languages.

MA and PhD programmes provides deeper knowledge about American literature and also scientific research skills. Thus, graduates of the programmes could be employed both in academic institutions and in private sector as a researcher.

Program Description: The Italian Language and Literature program offers language (levels from A1 to C1) with a wide range, literature and culture courses.  Besides covering the full range of Italian language, the Italian Language and Literature Department also provides students the possibility of approaching Italian culture through the literature and history. The Italian Language and Literature Program at Ankara University is the first and oldest Italian language program in Turkey and maintain its education tradition from 1960 until present.

Italian Language and Literature studies MA programme covers comparative literary studies, and pays particular attention to the study of Italian literature from the Middle Ages to the present day. In the MA courses, the study of Italian language and literature develops in constant dialogue with arts and history. In addition to training capable and creative scholars, one of the program’s objectives is to promote the effective teaching of Italian at all levels.

The Italian Language and Literature PhD Program offers Italian literature and culture courses on Italian classic writers such as Dante, Boccaccio, Petrarca, Ariosto, Leopardi, Manzoni, Fogazzaro, D’Annunzio, Foscolo, Verga and the modern ones like Primo Levi, Luigi Pirandello, Antonio Tabucchi, Umberto Saba e Umberto Eco etc. The Italian Language and Literature PhD Program also provide knowledge about the Italian literary criticism and its effect on the Italian writers.

Students can pursue their careers in different areas such as in media, international commerce, Italian language education, government service, travel and tourism, and communications, library and archival science; museum management.

Program Description: The programme is designed to train students with basic mastery of the Russian language and familiarity with the classics of Russian literature. Students concentrate in Russian literature and culture and Russian linguistics. Courses also focus on the grammar of Russian Language, Russian phonetics, morphology and syntax are taught to the students by teachers who expert in their fields. Department provides exchange opportunities for students with the high ranked Russian Universities such as Lomonosov Moscow State University.

Department also offers advanced research programmes at MA and PhD levels. Aim of these programmes is train academicians and researches with the ability to design an original research project and make unique contribution to the field.

Training in Russian can lead to careers in teaching, the creative arts, community work, governmental service, journalism, and research in many areas. Many students majoring in other fields find it useful to learn Russian as a valuable tool of communication and research.

Program Description: The programme provides knowledge of Spanish language, cultures, literature, and philosophy by focusing on cultural understanding, historical time periods and literature. The Department is designed to lead from the acquisition of competence in written and spoken with the structure and history of Spanish and understanding of the development of the literature.

The main purpose of our MA program is to train students in various subjects and disciplines so that they can make individual research as well as write scientific papers. The program has been designed to provide knowledge and develop critical thinking on traditional and modern approaches.

The program allows students to conduct research in Spanish and Latin-American literary and cultural studies. In addition, it provides for opportunities to expand collaborative research and teaching venues with other disciplines, such as Linguistics, Anthropology and History.

Program Description: The department emphasizes the practice and theory of reading and interpretation of German literature by analyzing profoundly German writers and their works.  Students in the department develop an advanced level of proficiency in the German language, spoken and written, and acquire a broad knowledge of the German cultural tradition. The Department offers a stimulating curriculum that includes a full roster of courses on language, literature, film, history, and culture. The courses are designed to prepare students for a variety of goals besides preparation for advanced literature and linguistic courses. 

The Master program in German Language and Literature addresses German literary subjects and types, and the evolution of types and writing styles. The influence of Latin on German literature is also taken into consideration. Students are provided with the skills they need to select and apply from among competing research approaches the proper method of analysis for their subject focus. Apart from gaining knowledge in the core areas of German studies, students also deal with concepts, theories and methods regarding literature, linguistics and media.

PhD degree programme teaches to facilitate communication in German, both linguistically and culturally as well as focuses on German Studies with special focus on Cultural Studies, including Gender Studies and Film Studies. Students are encouraged to pursue their academic interests by exploring a variety of disciplinary and theoretical approaches. In addition to topical seminars, directed study opportunities, and a defined number of electives courses, students must complete the PhD thesis.

The main areas of employment are in commerce, tourism, diplomatic missions, translation, literature, education and government service.

Program Description: The Department of French Language and Literature aims to teach French with various dimensions such as literature, language and culture, and to develop students’ oral and written expression skills. Another goal of this programme is to provide to students with through knowledge of the French Language which is widely used all over the world as well as providing them with a detailed survey and analysis of French Literature and Culture from Medieval times to the present. It also offers courses in Francophone Literature, literary theories and criticism and linguistics.

The MA programme of French Language and Literature aims to give each student develop an advanced knowledge of French and Francophone literature, its history, and major works, and a sound knowledge of the traditions, aims, and methods of scholarly research in the field. The courses of this program are designed to deepen literary knowledge with courses like Exoticism In French Literature I, The Poetic Narrative, Sociology of The Literature, Symbolist Poetry, and The Theatre of Jean Giraudoux.

The PhD programme allows specialization in a period of French literature, in French civilization/culture, and in specific critical approaches to literature. The programme is offered extensive advanced work in the fields of French studies and appropriate aspects of theory and methods, proficiency in the expository, developed linguistic skills in professional writing. 

A French literature program graduate can be hired as teacher, translator, editor, civil servant, merchandiser or diplomatic servant.

Depending on a bilateral agreement with Chinese government, department could also send up to 10 students to China and Taiwan for one year academic exchange program each year.

The MA programme of Chinese Language and Literature aims to give each student develop an advanced knowledge of Chinese and a sound knowledge of the methods of scholarly research in the field.

The PhD programme provides a balance of theory and history of Chinese literature and culture, while offering numerous opportunities for interdisciplinary research and study.  In order to participate in international academic conversations on literature, students are required to take a substantial number of courses and seminars in the theory and methods of literary studies.

Program Description: The Bachelor’s degree consist of two sections. On the first two years programme provides knowledge of Ancient Greek grammar, morphology and syntax. It provides knowledge of literature of İonian and Attica eras. On the second two years, students analyse classical texts from philological point of major writers of Greek culture such as Homers, Plato, Xenophon, Herodotus, and Euripides. This part of programme offers specific literature history courses on Hellenistic Era. The most important aim of the program is to equip their students with the formation of humanism and logical thinking by getting familiar with the first examples of freedom of mind on the classical texts and free their mind from dogmatic thinking.

MA programme is principally conceived as a research-training programme, which aims to build on the skills in independent learning acquired in the course of the student’s first degree and enable them to undertake fully independent research at a higher level. It particularly aims to acquaint students with the richness of evidence characterizing the study of classical antiquity, and to stimulate them to use knowledge of the relevant materials and texts.

PhD programme combines strengths in traditional philology, archaeology and material culture, and more recent critical approaches in a way that allows graduate students to gain a broad, rich, and interdisciplinary understanding of the ancient Greek world.

Program Description: The Department of Greek Language and Literature established in 1991 with in the department of Western Languages and Literatures in the Faculty of Language History and Geography. In 1995, the department gave its first graduates. During the first four semesters of the programme, the main lessons are about the Greek grammar and language. On the other hand, in the last four semester of the program examined the major literary genres like novel, story, poetry in the Modern Greek Literature. Successful students have the chance to go to the Greek Universities’ summer language program with scholarship.

The department of Modern Greek History and Literature is a 4-year bachelor’s degree program. During this 4 year, the program aims to teach Greek as a foreign language. During this 4-year program as well as the Greek Language, the students also get information about the important periods of Greece (history, literature, cinema and culture.) From the each student who graduate from this branch of the department expected to use effectively this language.

The student who graduates from this department use efficiently the translation techniques from Greek to Turkish and from Turkish to Greek. Gets the ability to follow developments in his/her branch also share information with his/her colleagues.

That is the reason; the department offers both MA and PhD degrees. Students of these programmes are expected develop skills both in interpretation of ancient texts to modern language and analyze Modern, Middle and Ancient Ages history and culture by using scientific research approaches. Since the modern Western though found it’s root in Latin world, Latin language studies provide a solid base for further social science related researches.

The main areas of employment of the graduates are museums though many of them could find a job at commerce companies or government bodies. Some graduates could be employed as teachers in schools and language courses, translator, literary critic and technical consultant in publishing agencies, researcher (institutes of language studies and linguistics, archives and libraries), and writers at the information society.
